Who We Are
On October 22, 2004, a meeting of adjuncts at SUNY New Paltz was convened by Peter D.G. Brown, Distinguished Service Professor (Department of Foreign Languages), whose intention it was to facilitate the formation of an autonomous association of adjuncts. In attendance were 35 part-timers, who discussed the need to establish an independent voice and an identity for adjuncts. A Provisional Steering Committee of volunteers was formed and began meeting biweekly. These open meetings attracted a number of people who gave of their time and talents.
The original Provisional Steering Committee was comprised of the following members:
Yvonne Aspengren, Foreign Languages
Larry Carr, English
Jeff Crane, Art/ Art History
Thomas Impola, English
Russell Karasik, Psychology
Rachel Lagodka, English
Karin Lamb, Foreign Languages
Larry Queipo, Engineering
Robert Singleton, English
Beth Wilson, Art History and Committee Spokesperson
Soon to join were:
Ed Felton, Art/ Wood and UUP Part-time Concerns Committee
Judith Mohns, Art/ Foundation
In November 2004 the committee chose the name "Adjunct Faculty Association" and divided responsibilities among its members and other volunteer adjuncts. Professor Brown remained a senior faculty advisor and link to full-timers. Ed Felton shared the work and perspective of the UUP Part-Time Concerns Committee. Assisting with press contacts were Lisa Philips and Joan Schuman of Communication and Media, and Alice Andrews of Psychology offered web development expertise. Sympathetic students also offered to help with various tasks.
In December of 2004 the provisional officers were elected for a term of one year. They were:
Jeff Crane and Ed Felton, Co-Presidents
Thomas Impola, Vice President
Yvonne Aspengren, Secretary
Jeff Crane, Treasurer
In 2005 the organization continued to grow and has now nearly 100 members and friends. At the end of the year elections were held, the AFA By-Laws were ratified and the first Executive Committee was appointed.
