Adjunct Faculty Association at SUNY New Paltz

Founded in 2004, the Adjunct Faculty Association (AFA) is the only organization dedicated exclusively to the interests of contingent, non-tenured faculty at SUNY New Paltz.

There are currently over 400 adjuncts teaching at SUNY New Paltz. These part-timers comprise the majority (57%) of the instructional staff at this campus. Every year, this institution has a $200 million impact on the region, due in large part to the many courses taught throughout the school by its outstanding adjunct faculty. AFA seeks to advocate for adjuncts by raising general awareness of their issues.

Despite the hard work, dedication and loyalty of our contingent faculty, and despite union representation (UUP), adjuncts have for decades remained by far the lowest paid employees on campus. They are left out of Faculty Governance, have no vote at Faculty meetings and are generally excluded from departmental deliberations.

In the Spring of 2004, the faculty and staff voted overwhelmingly for a substantial increase in the base salary for adjunct faculty. Today, adjuncts still are not being paid a living wage. Follow this link to the text of the faculty resolution passed on March 12, 2004.

Although many adjuncts hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree, they make under $10,000 a year on average, while limited to teaching only two courses per semester. In a number of departments, the majority of courses are taught by dozens of adjuncts receiving poverty wages.

The AFA endorses equity for all adjuncts. This means equal pay for equal work, as required by federal law. If expected to hold office hours, contingent faculty should receive access to departmental office space, a mailbox, computer, and telephone.

Greater efforts need to be made to integrate adjuncts into the campus community. To the extent appropriate for non-tenured faculty, adjuncts should have the option to participate in Faculty Governance structures.

In an effort to learn more about adjuncts here, AFA conducted a Survey of Adjuncts at SUNY New Paltz. The results of this survey, the most extensive research on part-timers ever conducted here, were released in early 2005 and provide insight into the diverse academic backgrounds and concerns of this group.

On May 12, 2005, Faculty Governance hosted an open Forum on the Future of Adjuncts at SUNY New Paltz. This turned out to be the largest gathering ever devoted to this topic. Key issues were eloquently addressed by departmental chairs, AFA officers and many others. Follow this link for a full transcript of the proceedings of this Forum.

The AFA needs the active participation of many adjuncts in its efforts to strengthen the voice of contingent faculty. It is organized by charter as a membership organization with a nominal annual membership of $10. In addition, the AFA welcomes the involvement of full-time faculty and other friends in the community who want to support its work toward equity.
